The Cay: Honesty is it Always the BEST Policy?
“Honesty is always the best Policy.”
Do you agree with this adage? Many believe brutal honesty always wins over lies. But, are little “white lies” really that bad? Are there times when telling untruths help accomplish a goal for a positive outcome?
Think about Timothy and Phillips situation in The Cay. They are stranded at sea with nothing but the island, Stew Cat, each other, and their hope.
Consider this scenario from chapter 7:
From the tone of Timothy’s voice, Phillip feels he’s holding something back about their chances of being rescued. Timothy remembers his father having talked that way a few times – once when his grandfather was about to die, and another time when his dog was run over in Virginia, both times happened when he was younger. Now Phillip’s father is always honest with him because he said it’s better that way.
Consider your experiences in life. Have you been in a situation where someone withheld important information from you? Think about your experiences and what you understand about hope.
Do you think “Honesty is the best policy” is
always the best policy for every situation?
